Crop Rotation: A Natural Method to Improve Soil Productivity

Crop rotation is the practice of growing different types of crops on the same land across seasons. Traditionally, many farmers repeatedly grow the same crop because of market demand. However, this continuous monocropping reduces soil nutrients and increases pest infestation.

Different crops absorb and return different nutrients to the soil. For example, leguminous crops such as pulses help fix nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility for the next crop cycle. Rotating crops also disrupts pest and disease cycles, reducing dependency on chemical pesticides.

In addition to improving soil health, crop rotation helps farmers manage risk. If one crop faces market or climate challenges, diversified planting reduces financial loss.

Sustainable agriculture often begins with simple, low-cost practices. Crop rotation remains one of the most effective traditional techniques that aligns perfectly with modern smart farming principles.
